Fly Fishing

Fall is here! Cooler temperatures not only mean it is more fun to be on the water. The fish like it too. Bass fishing will continue to be good until winter weather sets in. Right now the Colorado River, San Marcos River and the Llano River are all good options. Try fishing with sinking flies in deeper water as water temperatures drop.
The trout fishing on the Guadalupe River should get going in the next couple of weeks. The water is low but there are quite a few holdover trout and they will get more active as the water temperatures drop. Additional fish will be stocked throughout the winter to increase the trout population.

I did a honeymoon float on the San Marcos with Merlin and Paula Tuttle today. We hooked a few really large fish. Paula started the day by landing a 5 pound smallmouth bass on her first cast. We weighed this one so it really was 5 pounds even though it looks bigger. Merlin hooked a much larger fish but it wrapped around a stump and got away. The fly of the day was a black rubber legged lead eyed bugger.

We did a float on the San Marcos River today. In Spite of the cold cloudy conditions fishing was good. Largemouth, Guadalupe and smallmouth bass as well as a few sunfish. Fish deep and use a slower retrieve. Fishing should continue to be good as temps bounce back in the next few days.

11/21/2007
Floated the Lower Colorado River with Shea McClanahan.  Fishing was good for largemouth and Guadalupe Bass. We even hooked a few nice catfish. Black and purple leeches were the most productive flies. Colder weather on the way may slow down fishing for a few days.

11/20/2007
Fished the San Marcos River today. Fishing was good. we caught fish on black an purple leeches, Clouser minnows and a few fish on poppers. The best fly of the day was a brown/orange wooly bugger. We caught several nice bass and one 5lb catfish. The water on the San Marcos is beautiful right now.

11/17/07
The bass are still eating! Floated the Llano today and caught quite a few bass and sunfish on hoppers. The weather was amazing. The water is crystal clear. as long as it stays warm topwater flies will continue to work.

11/12/2007
Another awesome day on the Llano River. I floated near Mason with Jeff Davis and Clay Towery. We caught quite a few nice Guadalupe and largemouth bass. Poppers and leech patters both worked well. Jeff Davis caught several lunkers on my favorite flip-flop popper. If the weather stays nice the fishing should remain good for a few more weeks.

11/7-10/2007
Fished the Devils River with Kevin Stubbs. This river is one of the most amazing bass fisheries I have ever seen. Lots of fish and quite a few large fish. Email me for information on booking a trip on this seldom fished stretch of river.

11/6/2007
Floated the Llano today with David Friedman. Weather was cloudy and cold. We did manage to catch a few nice Guadalupe Bass and a handful of sunfish.

11/5/2007
Fished the Llano above Castell with Ron Linehan today. Maybe the best fishing this year! We fished on top with hopper patterns. We caught so many fish we decided not to tell anyone because it was unbelievable.

11/3/2007
Floated the San Marcos River. Fishing was fair. We caught a few nice sunfish and bass on black and purple leeches fishing deep.

11/2/2007
Fished the Llano River today. Floated above Mason and fishing was good. Bass and sunfish are still coming up to the top. Hoppers and poppers worked well. If the weather stays warm fishing should continue to be good for a few more weeks.

The Llano River has been really good for the last couple of weeks. Lots of fish and a few really nice ones. Fishing has been best later in the day after the water warms up. Fish are still rising to hoppers and poppers. For larger fish try a bugger or baitfish pattern.
The Colorado River below Austin has also been producing some nice fish. Big bass and quite a few catfish on the fly! Try weighted streamer patterns in brown, black or white.

Fishing on the Guadalupe is starting to pick up. After a few slow days over the weekend we had a good day today. I a half day float with Paul and Gail Wallace and we boated about 10 fish. The fish of the day was landed by Gail. It was a nice rainbow that may have gone 20". The best fly today was a black midge size 20. Check out Gail's fish!

Good fishing on the Guadalupe this week. The best fly has been a black midge fished deep. We have caught fish on eggs and mayfly emerger patterns as well. Quite a few large trout as well as a couple over 20" in the last couple of days. The largest fish was a catfish caught on an egg pattern!

Trout fishing has been good the last few days. The fish have been very picky but they will eat if you find the right fly. Small midge patterns in black and white sizes 20 to 26 or larger prince nymphs and pheasant tails are good bets. Check out this weeks fish pics.

Lots of bugs on the water and lots of choices for the fish. Most of the fish we caught in the last couple of days have been on the swing. Try a small mayfly emerger or a caddis imitation. We also caught a few fish on streamers fished in the deep holes. Here is a photo of Jeff Davis with a really nice fish.

Good fishing during the last couple of weeks. quite a few big fish on small flies. Gray or olive RS2's in sizes 20 or 22. A lot of fish are eating the emergers so make sure to swing those flies out on the end of your drift. Here are a few fish pics.

Really great fishing lately. Lots of fish and quite a few in the 20 inch range. Cloudy days are defiantly better because the water is getting really clear. The best flies  have been emerger patterns. Try an rs2 in olive or gray. Caddis emergers have also been working well. And don't forget to swing those flies at the end of the drift.

Trout fishing on the Guadalupe is in full swing right now. There are lots of fish in the river and the fishing has been really good. Very clear water right now calls for small flies and light tippets.  4x, 5x and 6x tippets and size 20 and 22 flies. Check out the latest pics.

Great fishing everywhere. Trout fishing is going strong on the Guadalupe. Small rs2s and midges are still working well. The fish are also starting to key in on some larger flies. Try a hares ear or a Copper John above your small fly. The bass fishing on the Llano, San Marcos and the Devils River is getting going also. These warm days are getting the fish moving. Try a popper or a hopper.

Fishing continues to heat up the weather gets warmer. Good fishing on the San Marcos recently. Try a large hopper pattern. Chernobyl Ants are the ticket on the Llano. The black RS2 is still producing on the Guadalupe. Check out the latest fish pics. Especially Gary Aalen's big San Marcos bass caught on a hopper!

Good fishing everywhere. The trout are still biting on the Guadalupe. Best bets are to go during the week or fish really early on the weekends to avoid the growing crowds. For a little bit more solitude try the Llano or San Marcos. The bass are on the feed and most days you will have the river to yourself.
5/10/08
Fished the Guadalupe with Pat ottinger today. Fishing was great in the morning. Maybe a dozen fish before lunch. Caddis emergers and Mayfly emergers were the hot patterns. The sun and heat put the fish down after lunch though.

Great fishing on the Llano River this past weekend. Last weeks rains brought the river up and the fishing turned off on Wednesday. The water cleared up on Friday and was gin clear by Saturday. Great fishing on topwater flies. Try a hopper pattern or a popper.

5/21/08 - 5/26/08
Good fishing the last few days on the Colorado River below Austin. Good catches of large bass and catfish . Quite a few gar on the fly up to 48". Best flies are subsurface patterns like wooly buggers and crawfish patterns. A few fish were caught on topwater patterns.

Great fishing on the Llano River today. We did the float down to the James river. Clear water and lots of fish. All fish were caught on small poppers and Chernobyl ant patterns. Get out and fish the Llano River before it gets too hot.
6/03/08
Good fishing on the San Marcos River Today. The San Marcos is very clear right now. Got to sight cast to some large bass. Most of the fish were caught on poppers.
6/06/ and 06/07/08
Great fishing on the Llano River over the weekend. Fished a couple of stretches of the Llano River near Mason. Good fishing and very clear water. Everything was caught on top. Hopper patterns and poppers did the trick.
6/09/08
Fished the San Marcos River today. Caught several nice bass in the 2 lb range and hooked one in the 4 to 5 lb range. Everything was on a black hopper. The San Marcos is very clear right now.
6/11/08
Great fishing today on the Llano River near Mason. The water was low and clear and the fish were looking up for hoppers most of the day. as the day got hotter we had good luck fishing deeper with Clouser minnows.
6/12 and 6/13/08
Floated the San Marcos River the last couple of days. Good fishing and really clear water. Most of the fish are still taking surface flies, Hoppers and poppers in black or green seem to be the best choices.
7/15 - 7/22/08
Great fishing on the Eagle  River this week. The flows are down and the caddis hatch is in full swing. The best fishing has been with caddis drys and a nymph dropper in the morning and a pmd dry in the afternoon. The Colorado has been fishing well also. Hopper dropper rigs have produced the most fish.

Fished the Colorado River below Austin. The water is low and very clear. We caught quite a few bass in the 1 to 3 pound range as well as a couple of 3 to 5 pound catfish. The Best patterns were crawfish flies in brown or tan. Black wooly buggers and pink baitfish imitations also produced.
9/18/08
Fished on the Llano River today. The temperature was in the mid 80s most of the day and it was partly cloudy. Perfect fishing weather. Fishing was really good starting around 11:00. The best fly on the Llano today was a small black and yellow popper with long rubber legs. We caught quite a few nice Guadalupe Bass and Largemouth Bass and we lost count on the sunfish within the first hour. Right now is one of the best times to fish the Llano river. Fishing should be good for at least another month.
10/5/08
Good fishing on the Llano River today. Caught quite a few fish on hoppers. The river is low and clear right now and the fish are very aggressive.
10/6/08
Great fishing on the Colorado River today. bass up to 5 pounds on black wooly buggers. Best fishing was in the moving water. Quite a few fish on top including a few on a mouse pattern. The Colorado River is very clear right now and should fish well into November.
10/8/08
Fished the Llano today. The flow was up after the rain a couple of days ago. The water was up a little but very clear. The fish were a lot more active after the temperature warmed up a bit. We caught a few fish on top but sub surface flies were the best today. The best patterns were Clouser minnows and wooly buggers.
10/11/08
Fishing on the San Marcos River today was good. We caught a few nice bass and sunfish. A few fish rose to hoppers but sub surface flies were more productive. Weighted leech flies in black and brown worked best. Try anything with rubber legs. The San Marcos River is low and clear right now, but still has enough water for a nice float.
10/12/08
Great fishing on the Colorado River. We floated a stretch of water between Austin and Webberville. The water was very clear and the fish were very active. We caught bass and panfish all day. Several of the bass were over 3 pounds. The most productive patterns were weighted leech and crawfish patterns as well as an assortment of surface flies. Right now is one of the best times of year to fish the Colorado River. The combination of cooler temperatures and the reduced flows really makes for perfect conditions.
10/22/08
Did a float trip on the San Marcos River today. Really good fishing. The best fly was a brown and red deerhair diver. Most of the fish we caught today were largemouth and smallmouth bass. The largest fish was a smallmouth in the 3 - 4 pound range.
10/21/08
Awesome fishing on the Colorado River! We caught quite a few bass today. Several in the 3 lb range. Most of the bass were caught on deerhair divers. Several of the larger bass and one catfish were caught on a weighted black leech. Right now the Colorado River is fishing as well as any river in the hill country. The fishing should continue to be good for at least another month, maybe longer depending on the temperatures.
10/17-18/08
Fished the Devils River with Kevin Stubbs of Expedition Outfitters. The Weather was perfect and the water was unbelievably clear. Good catches of smallmouth and largemouth bass. The best fly patterns were black weighted wooly buggers and brown crawfish patterns. The next month should provide some great fishing on the Devils River.

Fished the Llano River near Mason today. The river was very very clear. The flow is still good despite the lack of rain. We caught fish on hoppers during the warmest part of the day. Small streamers were the ticket in the morning and the afternoon.
10/26/08
Great fishing today on the Colorado River. We caught several dozen  bass throughout the day. All of them were caught on surface flies. We were using some larger patterns to discourage the smaller fish. Deerhair divers or poppers were most effective. The Colorado River has really turned on in the last few weeks. The quality of the fishing is as good as anything in the hill country. Fishing should continue to be good until the weather really cools down.
10/28/08 - 11/10/08
I spent the last couple of weeks on the Devils River. Good fishing and beautiful weather the whole time. This is truly one of the most remote and hard to access rivers in the lower 48 states.

Good fishing on the Colorado River. The flow was low and the water is clear. We caught fish on crawfish patterns as well as a few on topwater flows. The Colorado river should fish well for at least a few more weeks.

We fished the Colorado River today. We floated down to the little Webberville boat ramp. Cold north winds and much cooler temperatures slowed the morning fishing. After lunch the fish were much more active. Clouser minnows, wooly buggers and even poppers produced bass and sunfish.

Great fishing on the San Marcos River today. Sub surface flies were the best producers.
11/29/08
Good fishing on the Colorado River. We fished a section above Webberville. We caught quite a few black bass and several large white bass. The most productive flies were rabbit leech patterns in orange or black.
12/03/08
Great fishing today on the Colorado River. We caught quite a few nice bass a few sunfish and one really large white bass. The best flies were black or purple leeches. Weighted flies or split shot on the leader will help get your flies down deeper. Fish a little slower and farther out from the bank.
